How do you handle data backups and disaster recovery?

We run automated daily backups for all managed applications, with point-in-time recovery capability and cross-region replication for business-critical systems. Backups are not useful unless they actually work, so we test restore procedures monthly.

Backup Strategy

Database Backups

  • Automated daily snapshots: Full database backups run every 24 hours during off-peak windows to minimise performance impact.
  • Point-in-time recovery: Transaction logs are captured continuously, allowing us to restore your database to any specific second within the retention window.
  • Retention period: 30 days for daily snapshots by default, configurable up to 90 days or longer based on your compliance requirements.

File & Media Backups

  • Object storage versioning: Files stored in S3 or equivalent services retain version history, so accidental deletions or overwrites can be reversed.
  • Incremental backups: Only changed files are backed up after the initial full backup, reducing storage costs and backup duration.

Cross-Region Replication

For critical systems — such as healthcare platforms handling patient data or financial applications processing transactions — we replicate backups to a geographically separate region. If the primary region experiences a catastrophic failure, your data is safe in a secondary location.

Disaster Recovery Process

  • RTO (Recovery Time Objective): Typically 1–4 hours for full system recovery from backups, depending on the application size and complexity.
  • RPO (Recovery Point Objective): Less than 1 hour of data loss for databases with continuous transaction log backups. Zero data loss for systems with synchronous replication.
  • Documented runbooks: Step-by-step recovery procedures are maintained and updated for every managed application.
  • Monthly restore tests: We perform a full restore from backup to a test environment every month and verify data integrity against checksums.

Compliance Considerations

For clients in regulated industries — healthcare (PDPA), financial services, or government — we configure backup policies to meet specific retention and encryption requirements. All backups are encrypted at rest using AES-256 and in transit using TLS 1.3.
