2019 Social Media Trends and Analysis (Part 2)

Social media are interactive platforms where content is created, distributed and shared by individuals on the web. Professors Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein of the ESCP European Business School define social media as “a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content”. Social media websites and applications allow users to create and exchange user-generated content where people talk, share information, participate and network through technologies such as blogs and social networking sites. Within the last decade, social media has become one of the most powerful sources for news updates, online collaboration, networking, viral marketing and entertainment. However, with the increasing number of social media platforms year by year, almost all social media platforms provide similar features to the users. By 2020, we’ll see the increased dominance of Instagram, especially among older demographics. “Instagram users are a lot older than people often imagine,” says Simon Kemp. “There are more 45 to 54-year-olds using Instagram than there are 13 to 17-year-olds.” Instagram will quickly evolve over the next few years and become the new home for brands. The way social media have been developing is quite fascinating. After Facebook was launched back in 2004, the way we are connected to the internet has changed than ever since. As for July 2019, most of the social media platforms have been introduces new features in their apps, which allowing users to fully experience the digital lifestyle. WhatsApp by Facebook will introduce Advertisement on WhatsApp; where the ads will be showed in its stories. Besides, WhatsApp also enhancing the privacy settings for group. This feature will allow users to be added in a WhatsApp Group only with consent. Under this feature, the users will get an invite every time they are added to a group with an option to either approve or decline within three days. Telegram by Telegram Inc. will introduce Location-Based Chats and Scam Alerts features. Location based chats will allows users to chat with other Telegram’s user nearby and the scam alerts will show a scam label for suspicious accounts. WeChat by Tencent have made changes on their Moments’ feature which user can search and add song snippets from WeChat’s comprehensive music collection to the videos you shoot and share to your Moments.

As for the conclusion, social media have the potential to evolve. Many of them are happening right now and we can clearly observe this, and the trend is rising as well. Some feature, however, maybe probable as with the popularity and huge investments into these platforms, the possibilities are endless. As more and more people depend on technologies and connections using the internet, social media will continue to evolve.

2019 Social Media Trends and Analysis (Part 1)

Billions of people around the world use social media to share information and make connections. On individual level, social media allows you to communicate with friends and family, learn new things, develop your interests, and be entertained. On a professional level, you can use social media to broaden your knowledge in a particular field and build your professional network by connecting with other professionals in your industry. At the business level, social media allows you to engage with your audience, gain customer feedback, and elevate your brand.

According to Hootsuite, the number of Social Media Users is 3.534 Billion (46% Penetration of Total Population: 7.713 Billion) globally. With the number of users arise, Facebook by Facebook Inc. recorded the highest number of active users with 2.375 Million. The spot is followed by YouTube (2 Billion), WhatsApp (1.6 Billion), Facebook (1.3 Billion), WeChat (1.112 Billion) and Instagram (1 Billion).

Malaysia, with the number of populations of 3.25 Million (Urbanization: 76%) shows the number of active social Media users with approximately 25 Million users (80% of population). Average daily time spent using internet via any device is 8 hours and 05 minutes; where average time spent for social media: 2 hours 58minutes, tv viewing time (broadcast, streaming, VOD): 2H 52 M, streaming music: 1h 18M.Youtube graded as the highest social media platform’s engagement from Malaysian with 93% active user for Q2 2019.The top 10 of social media platforms in Malaysia can be seen as follows:
